2007 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

The GSW is proud to present this year's keynote speakers:

Dean Kamen
Anil Gupta
Gururaj Deshpande
Ken Morse

Mr. Dean Kamen, American entrepreneur and inventor of the Segway HT. In April 2002, Kamen was awarded the Lemelson-MIT Prize for inventors for his invention of the Segway and of an infusion pump for diabetics. In 2005, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his invention of the AutoSyringe. In 2006 Kamen was awarded the Global Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations. In 1989, Kamen founded the organization, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The organization uses competitions to inspire high school students to advance their understanding of applied science. In 2007, it will hold 37 regional competitions and one national competition.

Dr. Anil Gupta, Chair in Entrepreneurship at IIM, Coordinator, SRISTI and Honey Bee Network, and EVC for the National Innovation Foundation. The Honey Bee network enables equitable knowledge sharing among global innovators. Honey Bees collect pollen without impoverishing the flowers and connect flower to flower through pollination. Likewise, the Honey Bee Network collects knowledge without impoverishing innovators and connects innovators via feedback, communication and networking in the local language. The Honey Bee network has demonstrated how to unleash a new paradigm of development by building upon a resource in which poor people are rich, namely their knowledge.

Mr. Gururaj Deshpande, founder of Sycamore Networks and the MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. Gururaj Deshpande's first entrepreneurial venture Coral Networks Corp, a network hardware firm in 1987, ended as a failure, but that didn't stop him. He went on to set up Cascade Communications, a gamble at manufacturing Internet equipment in 1990. In 1997, Cascade was sold to Ascend Communications for $3.7 billion. By that time, 72 percent of all Internet traffic was coursing through Cascade's products. Having repeated this success with Sycamore Networks in 1998, his second multibillion-dollar company, Deshpande has confirmed himself to be one of the most successful and innovative entrepreneurs in the world.

Mr. Ken Morse , serial entrepreneur and Managing Director of the MIT Entrepreneurship Center. Ken has played a key role in launching several high-tech start-ups, including 3Com Corporation, Aspen Technology, an expert systems company, and a biotech firm. Ken's batting average is 0.833: five of his start-ups went public or were successfully merged; one was a complete disaster. As head of the MIT Entrepreneurship Center, Ken is responsible for inspiring, training, and coaching new generations of entrepreneurs from all parts of MIT.
